Description

Walking Tours Around Ngorongoro : Gaze across the emerald green landscape, past the lapping waters that fill the crater and vast mountain that runs along the horizon, and walk amongst the countless striped zebras and wildebeest grazing on the grass in this lush green plateau.

Day 1: The Highlands

Arrive at The Highlands today (or earlier if you wish to visit the Ngorongoro Crater and enjoy other activities in the region), located on the side of the Olmoti Crater in the Ngorongoro Highlands. Enjoy an afternoon relaxing and enjoying views over the rolling Maasai land from the balcony of your unique geodesic dome tent. Your Wayo walking safari guide will meet you this evening to discuss the next days of walking and enjoy a delicious dinner and a good night’s sleep before your adventure begins the next day.

Day 2: Wayo Walking Fly Camp

Wake before sunrise for an early breakfast and set off on foot around one of the cattle trails that leads around the edge of the Olmoti Crater. It is possible to drive a short section of this, if you would prefer a less strenuous day (please advise at point of booking). Once you have rounded the crater, you will walk through the rolling grassy plains broken up by small Maasai villages and herdsmen with their iconic red shukas wrapped around their shoulders to keep away the cold in the early mornings. You will reach your fly camp in the mid-afternoon, located in the acacia Lahai Forest near the Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 3: Wayo Walking Fly Camp

It is an early start to the day, setting off after breakfast at sunrise, continuing your walk around the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and taking in some spectacular and unspoilt views of this iconic, dormant volcano. The early mornings here are particularly special, watching as the mist burns away and the warmth of the sun arrives — we recommend keeping your camera handy! The terrain varies as you walk, from acacia woodland to highland montane forest. You will walk through a traditional Maasai village, stopping with your guide to meet some of the local people and learning a little about Maasai life and culture before you continue your walk. Camp in a new spot in the acacia forest, enjoying a well-earned siesta in the afternoon when you arrive and dinner cooked over the campfire.

Day 4: Serengeti

Enjoy another spectacular day walking on and sometimes inside the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. You will notice the terrain gets drier as you move into the rain shadow of the crater, all while enjoying incredible and uninterrupted views of the crater floor. The walk will finish at around midday at the Seneto descent road on the western side of the Ngorongoro Crater, where the adventure concludes and you will bid your walking guide farewell. Here, an Asilia driver-guide and 4×4 safari vehicle will await with a picnic lunch to continue your journey into the Serengeti. The driver-guide for today and onward travel arrangements are not included in the adventure price.

Overnight: Not included and to be booked as add-on depending on your safari itinerary.

Ngorongoro Crater – Overview

A visit to the Ngorongoro Crater is an experience of a lifetime. As the world’s only intact caldera, the crater is the top attraction of the 8,292km²/3,202mi² Ngorongoro Conservation Area. There are few places that have comparable wildlife densities. It is not unusual to see the Big Five in one day here. And all this is in the most amazing setting with a backdrop of the 600m-/1,968ft-high crater wall.

Wildlife & Animals in Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is without a doubt Tanzania’s most productive Big Five destination. The crater floor teems with wildlife, and predator sightings tend to be exceptional. It harbors the world’s densest lion population and spotted hyenas are equally common. Look out for smaller carnivores, such as golden and black-backed jackals and bat-eared foxes. If you’re lucky, you might also see a serval hunting small rodents or birds.

Most safari heavyweights are well represented in the crater. Black rhino is the star attraction and big numbers of buffalo sweep across the grassy plains. Elephant herds rarely come through, but many lone bulls carrying massive tusks have made the crater floor their home. Although giraffes are common in the greater conservation area, you won’t find any inside of the crater. Presumably the steep walls form a natural barrier for them.

Birds & Birding in Ngorongoro Crater

There is excellent birding to be had in the Ngorongoro Crater. Even from a great distance, you’ll see flocks of pink flamingos in Lake Magadi. Come closer, and you’ll also spot ducks, herons, storks and waders. The crater’s most noticeable grassland residents include ostrich, kori bustard, grey crowned crane, secretary bird and rosy-throated longclaw. Be careful at the picnic spot: black kites are adept at swooping down to steal people’s lunch out of their hands. The forested crater rim has its own birdlife. Specials include white-eyed slaty flycatcher, Schalow’s turaco and several high-altitude sunbird species. Migratory birds are present from November to April.

Best Time To Visit Ngorongoro Crater

Wildlife viewing inside the Ngorongoro Crater is superb at all times. However, the grass on the crater floor is short in the Dry season (June to October) and this makes animal spotting easier. The scenery is lush and spectacular in the Wet season (November to May).
