What are the must-see sights in Tanga?

Key highlights include the geological Amboni Caves, the ancient Tongoni Ruins, Toten Island, and the Tanga Coelacanth Marine Park. You can also combine cave or city walks with day trips to pristine Pangani beaches or the Saadani National Park.

Can I see the rare Coelacanth?

Yes! Tanga's marine waters are famous for this "living fossil." While scuba diving specifically for them is heavily restricted, you can take eco-tours and guided snorkeling excursions through the Tanga Coelacanth Marine Park.

How many days do I need in Tanga?

A stay of 2 to 3 days is ideal. This gives you enough time to experience a historical city/cave tour, a marine park excursion, and some beach relaxation without feeling rushed.

How much do Tanga tours cost?

Prices vary widely based on the activity and provider. For instance, half-day guided tours to the Amboni Caves start around $90, while 2 to 3-day multi-park packages range from $600 - $1,000.

Is it safe for tourists?

Tanga is generally safe, but you should take standard safety precautions. Avoid walking alone in isolated areas after dark, use registered and trusted transport, and keep a close eye on your belongings.

Are there any health precautions?

Yes. Consult your doctor about required or recommended vaccinations, which often include Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A/B, and Typhoid. Additionally, Tanga is a malaria risk area, so bring mosquito repellent and consult a healthcare provider regarding anti-malarial medication.
